Annual Achin' for the Bacon 5K supports hurricane relief

Runners and bacon lovers alike will hit the pavement in June for the annual Achin' for the Bacon 5k."The Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce is excited to host the 14th annual Achin' for the Bacon 5K, a race that has become a favorite among runners across the region," said Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amanda Delp.The 14th annual Achin' for the Bacon 5K will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, with packet pickup and registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Cherokee Mountain Medical, located at 100 Greenway Circle, Erwin.The event, hosted by the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce, features a new, flat and fast course after the destruction of the previous route by Hurricane Helene. In previous years, the race was held along the Nolichucky River and Erwin Linear Trail."Due to the devastating flooding in September, we are unable to use our traditional race course this year," Delp said. "However, we are excited to introduce a new route that will still provide a great race experience for all participants.""While we look forward to one day returning to our traditional course, we are confident that this year's race will continue to offer the same high-energy, community-focused event that runners have come to love," she added.This year's race will be held at Erwin Fishery Park, offering participants a fun, competitive atmosphere. Race participants will get t-shirts, as well as the highlight of the event — bacon and pancakes at the finish line."We encourage everyone—whether you're a seasoned runner or just looking for a fun fitness challenge—to come out and experience the Achin' for the Bacon 5K," she said. "It's a fantastic way to enjoy Unicoi County, connect with fellow runners and be part of a growing tradition that brings our community together."The 5K Run/Walk event is open to all, whether aiming for a new course record or simply joining in for the community spirit. Registration is currently open for $30 at Athlinks, and participants are encouraged to sign up early to take advantage of the early-bird price."The event serves as a key tourism initiative for Unicoi County," Delp said.
