Jigsaw puzzles offer more than entertainment at the Senior Center

The Johnson County Senior Center has a puzzle table set up at all times. Tucked near a bookshelf filled with puzzles of all shapes, sizes, and themes, the table is a welcoming spot for members and visitors alike. Anyone is welcome to have a seat, sift through the pieces, and add a small part to a bigger picture. There is often a solo puzzler enjoying a peaceful moment, other times a group of friends chatting softly as they work together. For many people, solving jigsaw puzzles is a go-to activity on rainy or cold days. But beyond simple entertainment, puzzles offer meaningful cognitive benefits that support healthy aging. "Research shows that regularly engaging in mentally stimulating activities can build what we call 'cognitive reserve,' also sometimes referred to as 'cognitive resilience,'" says Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, an Alzheimer's and dementia specialist at NYU Langone Health. "This means the brain may be better able to compensate for age-related changes or disease for longer." In addition to supporting brain health, puzzles can also benefit mental well-being. For some, puzzling provides a calming, almost meditative effect—helping shift focus away from daily stressors and into the present moment. This gentle concentration can reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and create a sense of accomplishment, one piece at a time. Members of the senior center have embraced some ambitious and quirky puzzle challenges over the years. From a four-foot-tall Bigfoot puzzle (a truly big Bigfoot) to stunning nature scenes, the variety keeps things interesting. Some puzzles are so beautiful that members simply can't bring themselves to take them apart. A few have even been framed and proudly displayed around the center, serving as colorful reminders of teamwork and patience. When Director Kathy Motsinger-Eller first took over leadership of the Johnson County Senior Center eight years ago, she introduced the puzzle table as a simple way to give people a reason to sit down, slow down, and connect. "I never imagined how popular it would become," she says. "What started as one table and a few puzzles has grown into a daily gathering place. It's been really special to watch over the years." The puzzle table is a place for connection, conversation, and community. Whether someone stays for five minutes or an entire afternoon, they're always welcome to pull up a chair and join in.
