No withdrawals in Johnson County Elections

A week after half a hundred Johnson County candidates for local office met the filing deadline, that number remained the same after the withdrawal and "bona fide" deadline. Johnson County Elections Director Cheri Lipford confirmed Feb. 26 that no local candidates withdrew from the race. Then, after the Tennessee Republican party submitted its list of candidates it was allowing into its May primary, Lipford confirmed no Johnson County names were removed. The Tennessee Republican Party could reject candidates who petitioned as Republicans under their "bona fide" rules. There were no Democratic candidates who filed their petition in Johnson County. Lipford said the ballots will be finalized on Thursday, March 4. Voter registration deadline for the primaries is Monday, April 6 and early voting will be Wednesday, April 15, through Thursday, April 30. The absentee ballot request deadline is Saturday, April 25. County primaries are on Tuesday, May 6. As it stands, only two countywide races will have a competitive primary in May, barring write-in candidates. The County Mayor race between incumbent Larry Potter and challenger Dayton Tim Payne will be decided in the Republican primary. The other competitive race is the Republican Sheriff primary between Shawn "Bit" Brown and Billy Joe Woodard. The winner faces current Sheriff Clifton Gleen Worley in August, who filed as an independent. Every other race doesn't have enough Republicans versus seats to be a competitive primary. Independent candidates advance to the August local general election. In August, all 15 commissioner seats, three of four school board seats, plus Sheriff and Register of Deeds, will be in competitive elections. Town of Mountain City Board of Aldermen and Mayor seats, which are nonpartisan and have no primaries, will be on the August ballot.
