Senior Center encourages civic engagement ahead of election season

Over the past several weeks, the Johnson County Senior Center has served as more than a place for meals and social activities—it has also become a hub for civic engagement. David Vollrath, representing the League of Women Voters of Northeast Tennessee, visited the center each Thursday for five weeks to answer voter registration questions and encourage Johnson County seniors to participate in the upcoming county primary elections. Serving eight counties across Northeast Tennessee, the League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to promoting informed and active participation in government. Through education and outreach efforts like Vollrath's visits, the organization works to ensure voters feel prepared and confident heading into election season. The effort carries special meaning in East Tennessee, a region with a unique place in voting history. In August 1920, Tennessee became the 36th and final state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote. The deciding vote came from East Tennessee legislator Harry T. Burn, who changed his position after receiving a letter from his mother urging him to support suffrage— a reminder of the lasting impact one voice can have. Despite this legacy, according to America's Health Rankings, voter turnout in Tennessee remains relatively low. Local advocates hope that community-based outreach, especially among seniors, can help improve those numbers and continue the proud tradition of civic participation in Northeast Tennessee. At the Johnson County Senior Center, the message is simple: every voice matters. Many local candidates have visited the center in recent months, recognizing it as a gathering place for engaged and informed citizens. For seniors, voting is not only a civic duty but a way to directly influence issues that impact their daily lives. With early voting for the Johnson County primary election beginning April 15 and Election Day set for May 5, center staff and volunteers are working to ensure members have the information and support they need. All polling locations are equipped with accessible voting machines to accommodate individuals with disabilities, and voters may also receive assistance from a person of their choice if needed.
