Volunteers contribute nearly 380 hours to Senior Center programs in April

The Johnson County Senior Center is taking time this spring and summer to recognize the dedicated volunteers who help make many of the center's programs and services possible for local seniors. Across the United States, millions of volunteers give their time, talents, and energy to strengthen their communities. Whether serving meals, answering phones, teaching classes or helping neighbors stay connected, volunteers make an invaluable impact every day. According to Independent Sector and the Do Good Institute at the University of Maryland, the estimated national value of a volunteer hour in 2025 was $36.14. The Johnson County Senior Center sees that value firsthand through the generosity and dedication of its volunteers. During the month of April alone, 74 volunteers contributed approximately 379.5 hours of service to the senior center and its programs. Throughout May and June, Senior Center Director Kathy Motsinger-Eller is highlighting and recognizing the many individuals who help create a welcoming and supportive environment for Johnson County seniors. "Our volunteers are truly the heart of everything we do here," says Kathy. "Their kindness, compassion, and willingness to serve make such a difference in the lives of our seniors each and every day. We simply could not provide many of these programs without them." In May, recognition was given to the volunteer nurses who visit the center weekly to provide blood pressure checks and answer health-related questions for members. Volunteer greeters were also recognized for welcoming visitors, answering phones, and assisting members throughout the day. Exercise instructors who donate their time to lead fitness programs were honored as well, along with shuttle chauffeurs who operate the golf cart service that transports members from the overflow parking area to the center's accessible entrance. In June, the spotlight will turn to the volunteers who help operate the center's large congregate meal program, including kitchen volunteers, servers, and dishwashers. Additional recognition will also be given to volunteers who lead clubs and classes, Meals on Wheels drivers who deliver hot meals to homebound seniors throughout Johnson County, MyRide Johnson County volunteer drivers, and members of the Senior Center Advisory Board.
