Creative Learning at the Summer Arts Academy

The Johnson County Center for the Arts 'upcoming Summer Arts Academy will challenge students to tap into their creativity while having fun and learning the fundamentals of art and design. Each of the classes are designed for a specific age/grade group and will be taught by Johnson County Center for the Arts 'artists and teachers. Classes will be held at the Johnson County Center for the Arts' Gallery on Main at 129 W. Main St. and at the Art Education Building at 127 College St., Mountain City, Tenn. A BUGS LIFE - CLAY CAMP July 7-10, 1-3 p.m. for rising 2nd to 4th graders. With instructors Paige Janeri and Jacob Proffitt students will explore the fascinating shapes, colors, and textures of bugs while learning basic hand-building pottery techniques such as pinching, rolling, and sculpting. From building ladybugs and butterflies to beetles and other backyard critters, students will build confidence in their artistic skills while creating whimsical clay insects and miniature bug habitats to take home. Camp fee is $50 and all supplies are included. Class will be held at the Arts Education Building. DRAWING IN PERSPECTIVE July 7-9, 1-3 p.m. for rising 7th to 12th graders. Step into the world of realistic drawing with instructor George Sanfilippo. Students who want to bring depth and dimension to their artwork. Students will learn the fundamentals of one-point and two-point perspective, essential techniques used by artists, architects, and designers to create the illusion of space on a flat surface. This class will strengthen students' technical skills and help them in creating dynamic, realistic scenes. Camp fee is $40 and all supplies are included. Class will be held at the Gallery on Main. LEATHERCRAFT July 14-17, 1-3:30 p.m. for rising 6th to 12th graders. Instructors Jason Hughes and Carol Hieronymus will lead students in discovering the art of traditional leathercraft . Students will learn foundational leatherworking techniques including stamping, stitching, tooling, dyeing, and finishing as they create a variety of functional and decorative projects. Campers will explore patterns, textures, and design while working with real leather and professional tools. Projects may include keychains, bracelets, small accessories, and a handmade leather journal to take home and use for years to come. Camp fee is $50 and all supplies are included. Class will be held at the Gallery on Main. MOUNTAIN HERITAGE MUSIC CAMP July 14-17, 1-4 p.m. for rising 2nd to 12th graders. Ready to take your picking to the next level? Join us for Mountain Music Makers Camp, an immersive week of Appalachian music led by seasoned musicians and tradition bearers. Instructors Tim Lewis, Lois Dunn, Kenny Price, Janet Mahala, and other guest musicians will help students to explore the musical heritage of the mountains while building skills on guitar, banjo, fiddle, and bass. Throughout the week, campers will learn traditional songs and tunes, improve their technique, and gain confidence performing with others. In addition to instrument instruction, students will work on singing in harmony, ensemble playing, stage presence, microphone technique, rhythm, and musicianship—all the skills needed to become a stronger performer and band member. Camp fee is $75. Class will be held at the Gallery on Main. TREASURES & TRINKETS - CLAY CAMP July 14-17, 1-3:30 p.m. for rising 5th to 7th graders. Arghhhh! To all the pirates aboard, it's time to set sail for the pottery studio on a creative adventure filled with clay, imagination, and treasure-making fun with instructors Paige Janeri and Jacob Proffitt. Young artists will design and build their own handmade treasures, jewelry, beads, charms, and decorative trinket dishes using a variety of handbuilding techniques. Students will explore shaping, sculpting, texture, and glazing while creating one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by pirate loot, hidden treasures, and magical keepsakes. Camp fee is $50 and all supplies are included. Class will be held at the Arts Education Building. CLAY THROWDOWN - CLAY CAMP July 21-24, 1-3:30 p.m. for rising 7th to 12th graders. Let the games begin! Bring your clay skills, creativity, and competitive spirit to this exciting week of ceramic challenges and studio fun. Instructors Paige Janeri and Jacob Proffitt will lead campers in both handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques to the test through friendly competitions, creative prompts, and ceramics trivia. Every day offers new opportunities to learn, experiment, and laugh. Camp fee is $50 and all supplies are included. Class will be held at the Arts Education Building.
