Town pool not leaking as much after repairs

After various repairs, a pool that leaked three-quarters of a million gallons of water per month last year looks to be much improved. "We are only having to replace water loss from back washing and what's splashed out," Mayor Jerry Jordan said June 18. "Don't have any numbers but it's much better." The future of the 170,000-gallon pool was in jeopardy last year due to its excessive leaks. Town aldermen and recreation board members explored multiple solutions before settling on fixing the pool in the off-season. The pool's skimmer baskets were narrowed down to a possible major source of the leaks. The new baskets were installed shortly before opening day, forcing a week's delay. Mountain City/Johnson County Community Center Director Joey Beth Souder told the Mountain City Board of Aldermen and Mayor on June 2 that they had booked 20 pool party rentals for the summer. "We have lots of pool parties booked, but we do still have some open dates if folks are interested in pool parties," Souder said June 11. "We're working on planning a family swim night for July 18 with the movie in the park." Opening day on Saturday, June 6, was well attended, and that trend has continued through the first couple of weeks. The pool is open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The prices, cash only, are $4 for kids 12 and everyone else is $5. Season passes are $60 for kids 12 and under, and $75 for everyone else. Water aerobics has been well attended, Souder said. Those classes run Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10-11 a.m. Cost is $3 or a season pass. Adult swim, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, is 10-11 a.m. and costs $3 or is included in a season pass. The pool will be open for less than two months, closing before school starts in the first week of August.
