Town Planning Commission takes next step with 107 W. Main St. development

The monthly Town of Mountain City Municipal Planning Commission meeting was held Aug. 27 and among other matters, the standout issue was the presentation by Mr. Tim Payne to present a site plan for his proposed commercial building that is set to be constructed at the now vacant lot located at 107 W. Main St. Payne's plan will fill the current green space, where the gazebo currently stands next to the Angel wings mural and Local's Deli next door at 103 W. Main St. in the heart of Mountain City. His plan is to have commercial rental space in the lower floor and three 1,000 sq. ft. apartments above with each floor covering 3,100 square feet for 6,200 sq. ft. total. His request is in excess of what is allowed for multi-family dwellings on the site, so Payne is requesting approval of a variance since he falls short by 400+ feet. He will also be required to have designated parking for the apartment residents. Payne will be developing all the way up to the sidewalk where his property line ends in the front on Main St. and in the back all the way to behind The Tomahawk newspaper offices. He mentioned also owning the barber shop adjacent to The Tomahawk on Church St. Due to several adjustments related to water, sewer and the apartment number variance, Payne will return to submit a new site plan that includes the needed updates required for approval. Daniel Campbell of the First TN Development District was there representing the Town and discussed the new site plan requirements with Payne for the next meeting where it will come up for a vote. In other business, Ms. Sarah Muntz and her husband presented their new business called "Mountain Paws" which will be a 1,250 sq. ft facility located at 1849 S. Shady St. offering services as a pet spa and retreat center. It was unanimously approved.
