Johnson County Senior Center partners with Johnson County Airport for Aviation Day

Aviation Day couldn't have had a more perfect backdrop. With clear skies and sunshine overhead, Senior Center members gathered for a cheerful picnic lunch at the Johnson County Airport before taking to the skies for an unforgettable adventure. Forty‑five seniors stepped aboard the planes, some with excitement, some with nerves, and many experiencing flight for the very first time. At 90 years young, Thelma Lipford declared it "the best day ever." She raved about her pilot, Mr. BJ, who guided her over Mountain City. "I even saw over Watauga Lake!" she said, still glowing from the experience. "It was my first time flying, and I had a ball," added Steve Shepherd. "I can't wait for Aviation Day again." His joy echoed throughout the hangar as seniors returned, each with stories as bright as their smiles. A heartfelt thank‑you goes to Airport Manager, Dave Garis and the generous pilots who donated their planes, time, and enthusiasm to make this event truly special. Our wonderful volunteer pilots were Jerry Redden, Steve Elks, Bill Dobson, Matthew Mellon, and BJ Yoblinski. Their flights soared over Watauga Lake and Mountain City, offering breathtaking views that sparked lively conversations once the wheels touched back down. Seniors chatted excitedly about spotting their homes, local landmarks, and even the Senior Center from the sky. Their amazement was priceless. At the Johnson County Senior Center, our mission is to enrich the lives of older adults through education, wellness, nutrition, and—just as importantly—moments of fun, friendship, and new experiences. Aviation Day was a beautiful reminder of how meaningful those moments can be.
